About Herndon Theatre

Zoë Dillard
HHS Theatre Director

Zoë Wages Dillard has taught Theatre to students from kindergarten age through college, but enjoys high school age most. She started her teaching career as the Theatre Director/Teacher at Falls Church High School in 1983, and most recently taught/directed for four years at Westfield High School.

She is a proud graduate of Louisiana State University (Geaux Tigers!), where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Speech/Theatre Education, with a French teaching minor. Her experiences at LSU included performing at the Kennedy Center's Eisenhower Theater for American College Theatre Festival, and the Fringe Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1996, Zoë finished her Master of Theatre Education degree at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.

She blames her mother for her love of Musical Theatre and Shakespeare, which were foundations of her childhood. She blames her father for her passion, energy and the discipline that go with being a "Navy brat." Zoë's patient and ever-supportive husband, Kim, teaches elementary physical education and tennis. They have two wild daughters, Ashley and Phoebe, who are oddly gifted in both tennis and theatre, and keep Kim and Zoë hopping. The Dillards also have an eccentric, couch-loving, fur-shedding dog, named Ruth.

Dana Van Slyke
HHS Choral Director

Dana Van Slyke has served as choral director at Herndon High School since 1995. During her time there, she has conducted the Concert Choir, Herndon Chorale, Heatwave show choir, the Madrigal Singers, Bennett Street Boys and the Shebees. In addition, she has taught AP and introductory music theory.
Under her direction, the Herndon choirs have received much recognition for their excellence in performance.

Having a strong background in musical theater, Ms. Van Slyke has played a large role in producing Herndon’s theatrical productions. Oklahoma!, the fall 2009 production, marks the fourteenth musical in which Ms. Van Slyke has served as musical director at Herndon High. Along with her colleague and husband Jim Van Slyke, Ms. Van Slyke has directed, arranged, produced, and choreographed ten Broadway revues.

Ms. Van Slyke is a graduate of Ithaca College with a degree in music education and vocal performance. She also holds a master’s degree in music education from Shenandoah Conservatory. She feels her most important accomplishment, however, is her wonderful family, Jim, Conor, and Ethan!
